The 360 controller streamlines the connection with a bottom mount for the adapter, minimizing snagged wire issues of yore. The top-mounted headset plug on the Controller S was functional, but the wire for the headset had to go over or under the controller to get to the player's head. Speaking of Xbox Live, the 360 controller has also progressed in terms of headset connection. In action, each quarter of the ring of light will shine to designate players 1 through 4, and the center button can also be used to transition from game to communication features in Xbox Live. A solid press will power on the 360 and the controller (finally!) if the console is off. While the logo on previous Xbox controllers seemed to exist for no other reason than to remind you that you weren't playing a Playstation, the 360 controller's is actually super cool.
The most significant change is the center Xbox logo/Ring of Light. Analog triggers remain, though the 360 again improves over the previous designs, as their throw is shorter and more precise. You've come a long way little controller.īutton placement is improved over the Controller S, with the awkward black and white buttons repositioned on the shoulders. Despite the fact that the wireless models carry two AA batteries, the controller sits neutrally in one's hands, with no proclivity towards a forward lean that some other wireless controllers suffer for. The plastic is textured in an unobtrusive but attractive (looking and feeling) pattern, and weight distribution is superb. The hand prongs are subtly contoured and naturally comfortable. Moving beyond simple design aesthetics, the 360 controller is easily one of, if not the, most ergonomically comfortable console controllers around. While it seems that Sony may be planning a fairly radical departure from the tried and true DualShock design for the upcoming PS3, Microsoft has managed to add spice to an old design, a clever move in developing Xbox brand continuity. While it breaks no major new ground, it builds upon the design cues of the terrible original and the much more refined Controller S in a fluid manner, producing a visual impression of futuristic progress and refinement. The 360 controller is a solid evolutionary step in the Microsoft controller species. It's safe to say that after a pretty rough start, Microsoft has really learned what makes a good controller, cause the 360 controller is pretty bloody tight.
You've all seen it by now, and the lucky ones among us have them in hand. As soon as the 360 was announced, debate began to stir on what the next Microsoft controller would look like. Fortunately, Microsoft solved almost all of those problems with a quick redesign and release of the Controller S.
